Dry Eye Treatment in West Hollywood

Advanced, non-invasive dry eye therapy with no skin tone contraindication. Real relief. No compromise.

IPL is one of the most effective dry eye treatments available — but it isn't safe for everyone.

If you have a deeper skin tone, IPL carries a real risk of hyperpigmentation and burns. Most practices either don't tell you that, or they have no alternative. Many dry eye practices in Los Angeles offer IPL but don’t advertise that it's contraindicated for Fitzpatrick skin types V–VI — patients with medium-to-deep brown or Black skin. And almost none have a comparable alternative protocol built into their standard of care.

At CLARITY on Melrose in West Hollywood, we do. Dr. Danielle Richardson, OD offers Radiofrequency (RF) therapy and her proprietary Blink Optimization Therapy protocol — delivering the same clinical outcomes as IPL, without the skin tone contraindication.

Radiofrequency (RF) Dry Eye Therapy

THE TREATMENT

Radiofrequency energy gently heats the eyelids and meibomian glands, softening blocked secretions and improving oil flow into the tear film. RF reduces eyelid inflammation, supports tear film stability, and provides subtle periocular skin tightening all with no light energy and no skin tone restriction.

RF dry eye therapy works by:

  • Warming and liquefying blocked meibomian gland secretions

  • Reducing chronic eyelid inflammation

  • Improving the lipid layer of the tear film to prevent evaporation

  • Stimulating collagen in the periocular skin as a secondary benefit

Ideal for patients with evaporative dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction, or lid inflammation who are not candidates for IPL.

Blink Optimization Therapy

Blink Optimization Therapy is Dr. Richardson's proprietary dry eye protocol and CLARITY's most comprehensive treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction.

It combines three modalities in a single session:

  • Radiofrequency (RF) — heats and softens blocked gland secretions

  • Dynamic Muscle Stimulation (DMST) — re-tones the muscles responsible for eyelid closure and blink mechanics, improving the mechanical expression of meibomian oils with every natural blink

  • Meibomian Gland Expression — manually clears blocked glands for immediate improvement in oil flow and tear quality

The result is a treatment that addresses dry eye at every level — gland function, tear film quality, eyelid mechanics, and ocular surface inflammation without a single pulse of light.

Suitable for all skin tones. No contraindication based on Fitzpatrick type.

  • IPL uses broad-spectrum light that targets melanin — the pigment responsible for skin color. In patients with more melanin (Fitzpatrick types V–VI), this can cause burns, hyperpigmentation, or permanent pigmentation changes. RF uses heat energy rather than light, making it safe for all skin tones.

  • For meibomian gland dysfunction, yes. Both treatments aim to restore gland function, improve tear film quality, and reduce chronic eyelid inflammation. Blink Optimization Therapy adds the mechanical benefit of Dynamic Muscle Stimulation, which IPL does not address. For some patients, the combination of RF and DMST is actually the superior protocol.

  • DMST is a technology that delivers controlled electrical stimulation to re-tone the muscles responsible for eyelid closure and blink mechanics. Healthy, complete blinking is essential for spreading oils across the eye surface with every blink — and many dry eye patients have incomplete or weakened blink patterns that worsen their symptoms. DMST addresses that directly.

  • In most cases, yes. The two protocols address complementary aspects of dry eye and can be used together or sequentially. Dr. Richardson will review your treatment history during your evaluation.

  • Patients typically report improvement after 2 to 3 treatments. For optimal results, 4 sessions are advised. To ensure long-term results, a maintenance session is recommended every 6-12 months.

  • Yes. RF stimulates collagen and elastin in the periocular skin, resulting in subtle tightening and skin quality improvement around the eyes — a cosmetic benefit alongside the therapeutic one.

  • The periocular area is anatomically distinct from the rest of the face. An optometrist with periocular aesthetic training understands the structures involved at a level most aestheticians and med spa providers don't. Dr. Richardson's clinical expertise means your eye area is in hands that understand what's underneath the skin, not just what's on top of it.

  • None. Most patients return to normal activities immediately. You may notice mild redness or warmth around the eye area for a few hours — nothing that requires recovery time or affects your day.

Why CLARITY for your Dry Eye Treatment?

Dr. Danielle Richardson, OD — dry eye specialist, not a device operator. Dr. Richardson built CLARITY around this specialty. Every treatment recommendation comes from a clinical evaluation, not a service menu.

Inclusive protocols by design. CLARITY proactively screens every patient for skin tone candidacy and has an RF based alternative protocol ready. It's not an afterthought — it's standard of care here.
